John 14:12 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Read our Text for Today very closely, and do it more than once. Now let’s examine it closely. Jesus said, “Verily, verily…” That signifies a statement of absolute truth; it is tantamount to taking an oath to speak the truth, and more than that, this is what Jesus said.
He then adds, “He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also.” What a wonderful promise from the lips of Messiah Himself. This is surely strong, faith-building spiritual food for any believer who will fully receive it. Consider the works Jesus did; healed every kind of sickness, opened blind eyes and deaf ears, loosed mute tongues, did miracles of restoration, did miracles of supply, walked on water and calmed storms. And in our Text for Today He says you and I can do the same things. Oh how wonderful that truth is to my spirit.
Ah, but there’s yet more; MUCH more. Jesus said we would do “greaterworks than these.” But what could be greater than all the recorded works that Jesus did? John said that if all the works of Jesus were written in books, the world could not contain them. Yet we are to do “greater.” Once again, what could be greater? Consider this; Jesus never had the privilege of leading anyone to the new birth. In fact, He was the first begotten from the dead. So if you lead someone to the new birth, you have, in fact, done a work greater than Jesus did while He was in the earth. Oh, and let us not forget the mighty baptism in Holy Ghost. As long as Jesus was in the earth, He could not send the Spirit. That happened on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after Passover. Have you ever led someone to the baptism in Holy Ghost? If you have, you’ve done one of those “greater works.”
But how can it be possible that we do works greater than Jesus did while He was on the earth? Jesus gave us the answer; “because I go unto My Father.” Oh what a wonderful thing Jesus has done for us! He suffered and died for our redemption, and was raised from the dead for our justification, made us His joint-heirs, filled us with Holy Ghost to be our Helper, Comforter, Guide, Teacher, and Co-laborer to help us exceed His Own works. AMEN!
