Self-made Sons

To be “self-made” is to be grossly deceived.

John 19:7 – The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.

Here is a statement that I have heard throughout my lifetime.  “So-and-so is a self-made something-or-other.”  It may have been, “Rockefeller was a self-made millionaire.”  Regardless of the party of whom it was said, and regardless of what that person was to have made of him/herself, the statement is false.  It NEVER happened.  NO ONE is a self-made anything.  Every human being, each of us is the product of the combined influence of a number of people of which we have lost count.  And the older one gets, the longer one lives, the greater the number of influences that serve to mold the life one ultimately lives.  That’s just the way it is.

Now the Jews did indeed have a law that made worthy of death anyone who “made himself the Son of God.”   But by that very statement, all their actions against Jesus were illegal.  You see, Jesus did not make Himself anything.  He was born of a virgin, conceived by the seed of the Word of God in the power of Holy Spirit.  All that was NOTHING of Himself.  He was raised from childhood to adulthood by Joseph and Mary, Joseph be recognized as His Father, and Mary truly being His mother.  Upon His baptism by John near the Jordan, it was Father God Who Himself declared Jesus as His “beloved Son.”  It was on that basis that Jesus declared He and the Father were One, and that He and the Father could indwell the believer, and that He came from the Father, returned to the Father, and would send us another Comforter, even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive.  So, you see, Jesus in NO WAY declared that He had made Himself the Son of God.  But He DID declare that He was the Son made so by the Father via the Word and by the power of Holy Spirit.

And how does that impact you and me?  In every way.  We have made ourselves to be no one.  “It is He Who has made us, and not we ourselves.”  God has made us who we are, and it is God Who has made all things for us, and us for His glory.  It is God Who has called us to Himself, made us in His image, filled us with Himself, filled us with His Spirit, given us His Word, and delegated to us His authority and ability by His Word, His Name, and His Spirit through faith in Him.  Anyone who considers him/herself self-made is grossly deceived, walking in darkness, and headed for destruction.  And if anything is made by them, it is their own destruction, for failing to receive and believe the light and walk in it.  Therefore, I say to you, any self-made son of God is, in reality, NONE OF HIS.
