Tarrying Meetings

Not all church services are the same; not all serve the same purpose.

Acts 1:14 – These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Could it be that today’s church as lost some of its great efficacy by being far less than specific about the purpose of its meetings?  Are we too general in how we apply our faith and purpose as it relates to what the Lord desires from us, and what we need and desire Him to do in, for, with, and through us?  For instance . . .

  • Are what we call “prayer meetings” truly “prayer meetings?”
  • When we gather for church services, what are their purpose?
  • Are they intended to be teaching meetings that inform and instruct the body of Christ in its proper role and function in the earth?
  • Are they times when we come together for specific needs, such as healing meetings, or deliverance meetings?
  • Are they evangelistic in purpose when we strive to reach as many unbelievers as possible with a salvation message?
  • Are they tarrying meetings in which we truly set ourselves before the Lord in unity for a specific purpose; for specific revelation of divine direction and preparation?

There was a time when this was the norm for the church.  But have we come to such a “one-size-fits-all” mind-set that we think our coming together once a week can get it all done in one or two hours?  I see far too much of the latter, and much too little of the former.  Are we coming together to exercise our faith in unity, or are we coming together out of habit holding general expectations, usually at a very low level, that God will do whatever needs to be done?  Are we living in a “que serra, serra” ministry mentality, simply holding a feeble thought pattern that whatever will be, will be?  Perhaps it is time for a wake-up call, for a change, for a re-examination of some of OUR ways.  Remember, HIS ways and OUR ways are NOT the same.  I believe it is time we became more focused, and by that, more divinely directed in our manners of doing.  His ways are higher than our ways.  Let us be lifted up in our doing, do things His way, and thereby, receive things at His level.  Let us find time for tarrying meetings as the disciples did as they awaited Pentecost.  What is it that Father desires to impart TO us, IN us, FOR us, and THROUGH us that will come in no other way than by our tarrying for them?  Tarrying in unity; in faith; in full expectance of the Word fulfilled; in a holy readiness to respond immediately to His moving.  Consider what you (individually), or we (collectively) need in our lives today, and prepare yourself to wait, abide, and tarry in His presence until you are filled with it.  THEN go forth in the power of the Spirit.
