It Still Applies

It is so profitable for one to rightly divide the Word of God to avoid being confused.

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

When Jesus spoke to His disciples, sending them out two-by-two, and told them to go without coat or money, He was not speaking to sending His disciples out today.  That was a special word to a specific group for a special dispensation of time.  During that time, they carried the authority to raise the dead when they chose to do so.  You and I do not live with that authority.  Today, such a work is ONLY as Holy Spirit wills.  When the Lord spoke through Abraham of a certain duration of time Israel would be under Egypt’s bondage, He was speaking specifically about Israel, and no one else.  Things like these need to be kept clearly in mind when seeking to rightly divide the Word of God as to whom it relates.

Our Text for Today was spoken to the children of Israel who had been carried away captive by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon.  Take time to read such a Scripture in its context before seeking to apply it to any other situation.  However, that does NOT mean it is not applicable to you today.  Though it was spoken at a specific time to a specific people in a specific situation, in this case, it does indeed apply to believers today.  To accurately understand and apply our Text for Today to believers alive now, we need to be students of God’s Word in a manner that gives us clear understanding of the nature of our Father, and great Biblical truths that surround His identity, nature of His heart, and will for His people.

For instance, consider the words of Jesus in Luke 4:18.  He said the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him to deliver the captives.  That’s what our Text for Today indicates.  It still applies today.  Consider the words of 3 John 2.  God wants His people to prosper and be in health.  That’s what our Text for Today indicates.  It still applies today.  Anything the Lord desired for His people at a previous time, especially when it conforms to the way He moves and operates today, He still desires for His people now.  Father has ALWAYS desired His people to be holy, to live by faith, to walk in love, to be blessed in the city and in the field, to be the head and not the tail, to live as they were made, in His image.  He had made it possible for all who will follow, obey, and trust Him completely.  If it is according to His Word, regardless of the day or place, it still applies.
