I Have a Friend – 10

Imagine a friend who has committed to taking care of every need you could have. I have a friend like that.

He Provided Me Comfort

Text for Today – Proverbs 18:24 – A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

I think it reasonable to believe that only the lazy and spoiled would expect to be comforted when there is really nothing about them that needs comforting.  Think about that statement in light of what it means to comfort someone.  If I am already comfortable, why would I need to be comforted?  I realize that as I write this edition of the Second Miler, I will often use terms that refer directly to Holy Spirit.  Well, the fact remains that when Jesus spoke of a Comforter, in was in John 14:16 that Jesus said He would pray to the Father to send His people “another Comforter.”  Another Comforter?  What we should understand from that statement is that the presence of God in someone’s life will certainly serve as a comfort to that person if it is, in fact, comfort they need.  According to these words of Jesus, while He was with His disciples, He was, in fact, their Comforter, and that following His departure to the right hand of Father, they would need “another Comforter.”

So, whether my comfort comes by the direct presence of my heavenly Father, my Lord, Jesus Christ, or by the assigned purpose and ministry of Holy Ghost, I have a Friend, and He comforts me.  It makes no difference who you are, the passing of a dear loved one, especially a parent, spouse, child, or sibling is NOT a comfortable experience.  When my father died, and then more than 20-years later, my mother, both of whom were Christians, my heart was saddened.  I missed them after their passing, and still do today.  I can tell you for a fact that when someone has been a close part of your life for more than a half century, you will miss them when they’re no longer a part of your daily fellowship.  At that point, having someone who knows how to comfort you is priceless.  I have such a Friend.  When a dream you have sought after and pursued, sometimes for decades, seems to be completely broken and destroyed, having someone who knows how to comfort you is priceless.  I have such a Friend.  When sickness or disease attempts to ravage you body, have someone who knows how to comfort you, especially with the knowledge that there is a clear path to health and overcoming victory, is priceless.  I have such a Friend.  And in each of those situations, it is the same Friend that stands in that place as my Comforter.  Yes, I know it is Holy Spirit Who is my present Comforter, but without Jesus, that would not be true.  I have a Friend Who comforts me.  His Name is Jesus.
