Sometimes our first lessons in life cover so much more than we imagined. STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN.
Text for Today – Proverbs 4:20-22 – My son, attend to my words; incline thine ears unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
I remember as a child in elementary school (and these were days long before Sesame Street) of learning safety rules concerning the crossing of a railroad tracks. Three words were indelibly imprinted upon my mind: STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN! I look back on that now and realize that life is a railroad crossing; at least one per day, and sometimes more. For every decision you face in life, there is the possibility of choosing to follow the path of the world (the railroad track), or the Lord has laid before you. Satan will see to it personally, if need be, that you have to cross his tracks as often as possible. So, why not just rush ahead and get across those tracks? Why STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN? For the same reason you should do that in an automobile. Trains run on those tracks, and you don’t want to be hit by a train.
STOP. Take time daily to go to God’s Word for food, strength, meditation, study, healing, and provision. The root and seed for everything you could ever need in your life is in the Word of God, and faith to create and receive it comes from the Word of God. LOOK. While being circumspect about what is going on in the world around you, keep your focus on the Lord, and since God and His Word are One, keep your focus on His Word. Our Text for Today makes that point as clearly as it can be made. God and His Word are One, the same, inseparable. Never loose sight of that unchanging truth. LISTEN. Choose to listen for the voice of the Lord through His Word, from His Spirit, and even from true men and women of God through whom He may speak a Word into your life. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping your life filled daily with the life-giving, life-saving, life-enriching Word of God. So, each day, invest you time into following these safety rules. STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN!
