Light, NOT Lightning

Lightning flashes.  Light shines.  You are to shine, not flash.

Text for Today – Matthew 5:14 –  Ye are the light of the world.

You can travel at night with only momentary glimpses of your surroundings made possible by intermittent flashes of lightning.  Or you can trave in the day with the constant illumination of the sun.

Lightning is powerful, delivering hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity with a single strike.  But at its most brilliant, it is only momentarily illuminating.  The sun, on the other hand, is powerful, too.  The difference is that the sun’s illumination is constant and steady.

Flashes of lightning can, indeed, be brilliant, seen even in the daytime under the shadow of overcast and cloudy skies.  But think of this.  The sun is so powerful, that its light is able to penetrate those same clouds, even to the point of causing sunburn on human skin, and once again, its shining is constant.

Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world.”  He did not say, “You are the lightning of the world.”  Yet that is the way many Christians seem to live.  Their witness of the love, life, and power of Christ is, at best, intermittent, and even then the power of their witness becomes suspect due to its inconsistent nature.  The Lord has saved us that we might be a continual outshining of His light in the darkness of this present world.

And note, too, that we are not called to be a reflection of His light, but a direct outshining of it.  The moon is a dead surface, its only light being a reflection of what is cast on it by the powerful light of the sun in its constant state of nuclear fusion.  Jesus, during His earthly ministry, was the light of the Lord.  He was the Sun of Righteousness arisen with healing in His wings.  As the Father sent Jesus, so Jesus has sent us.   Now we are the light of the world.  Let us show forth by the mighty working of Holy Spirit in our lives that constant outshining of His presence in us.  Let us go forth as sons (and suns) of Righteousness with the healing touch of the King of kings in our hands, and the healing Word of God on our lips.  Be light, NOT lightning.  Be constant, NOT intermittent.  Shine forth with, DO NOT reflect, His light.  Remember, YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD,  NOT LIGHTNING!
